Connections for ‘At-Risk’ Young Refugee People: Making Crisis Supports Work – 2009 & 2010
During 2009 and early 2010, our team undertook consultations and liaised with organisations across the health, multicultural, housing, social support, policing and youth services sectors to identify and discuss how to improve crisis support for vulnerable young people from refugee backgrounds. We worked directly with 89 workers from 31 organisations including government departments and non-government agencies. Many more workers and organisations received information about the project and contributed to discussions about future improvements. Over the course of a year, we conducted a series of workshops, meetings and consultations to achieve a level of cohesive direction that would provide good outcomes for young refugee people as well as the respective organisations and sectors. Recommendations emerging from this work provided direction to Department of Human Services, Southern Metropolitan Region, for progressing activities that will further develop the capacity and capabilities of services to support young people from refugee backgrounds.
