Business leaders have been quoted as saying "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail..." and "if you don't know where you are going, you'll end up somewhere else." Some important questions to consider when thinking about the planning process are:
- Does the organisation have a mission, vision and values statement that reflects the journey it thats to take and the trends that are likely to impact on the organisation's direction?
- How will the organisation measure its progress toward achieving its goals?
- How will the organisation determine if there is a gap between where it wants to be and where it is today?
- Does the organisation have core strategies that drive its operations?
- Does the organisational plan cascade through the organisation so that all functions are aligned to the plan?
- Does each business unit have a 3-5 year business plan and an annual operational plan?
